Protein is important, but timing is not everything

Protein supports muscle repair, growth and maintenance. For people trying to build muscle, total intake across the day matters more than relying on one high-protein meal at night.

Many active people are not necessarily low in protein overall. They are often just inconsistent with how they spread it across meals and snacks.

Build a more even pattern

A steadier intake across the day is often more practical and more effective than trying to make up for missed meals later.

  • Include a clear protein source at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Add protein-rich snacks when training load or appetite demands it.
  • Use recovery meals to support both protein and carbohydrate needs after training.

Easy food-first options

You do not need to rely on supplements if your day is built well. Food-first options are often enough for many people.

  • Greek yoghurt, eggs, milk, cheese and tinned fish are useful staples.
  • Chicken, beef, tofu, legumes and lean mince can anchor main meals.
  • Smoothies can be helpful when appetite is low or the day is rushed.
